Do I need to subscribe to the Thundergrid network and if so, how?

You will need to register on Thundergrid.net to use our charging stations. Sign up at Chargenow.thundergrid.net.

How much does it cost to charge?

We recommend charge point owners adopt our standardised rates, which can be found below. However, as this is their own charger, they are free to set the tariff at a rate of their choice.

Fast AC charging: You pay per kilowatt of power used during your stay ($/kWh). Our typical fee is $0.45c/kWh.

Rapid DC charging: You pay a fixed fee per minute plus for each kilowatt of power used during your stay. Our typical fee is $0.25c/minute + $0.25c/kWh *prices may vary for some stations.

How fast are your chargers?

This will depend on a number of factors:

  • the battery level at the time of connection

  • the charging capacity of each car model (e.g an older Nissan LEAF has a maximum on-board charger of 3.6kW - 7.2kW per hour)

  • the cable used for charging (single-phase or three-phase, depending on the car model).

  • your car model and the current charge state of your battery.

At AC charge stations, charging an electric car (from 20% to 80%) can take an average of 2-4 hours (depending on the car).

At a DC charge station, charging an electric car with a battery level of (from 10% to 80%) can take an average of 25 minutes.

Do your chargers include parking?

Typically, Rapid DC chargers will not have parking fees as users are encouraged to charge up and then move on so the next user can charge.

Slower AC chargers may have parking fees, which will be itemised separately on the Thundergrid web app charger pricing page, or paid for via traditional parking meters.

Do I need to bring my own cable?

Our DC charge points have cables connected to them (tethered cable). These will not require your own cable.

All our AC charge points have Type 2 sockets (which is becoming a global standard). YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN CABLE.

Common Type 2 cars include BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Renault ZOE, etc.

Common Type 1 / J1772 cars include Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen, Mitsubishi, etc.

Please note: these vary, so make sure you check which cable you might need before purchasing one.

Thundergrid is powered by Eco Geek Co who also sells these cables. Find out what cable you need here or buy your own cable.

In some cases, the charge point owner may have a cable available to borrow while charging (some may require a deposit). See the charge stations listing description on the Thundergrid web app for more information.

What if there is a problem with the charge station?

Do you have a phone app I can download?

We are working on this! This will only be possible as the network grows. We do expect to be able to release an iPhone and Android app to improve the user experience.

In the meantime, to make it easier to access our website, we suggest loading the Thundergrid web app in your phone's browser, and saving it as an easy access/shortcut icon on your smartphone's home screen.

Read more details on how to do this here.
