Dynamic, Smart Load Management is Key

Want to place several EV chargers in one building? Load management is CRITICAL

As electric vehicles become more popular, so too will the need for electricity to charge them at home or in businesses.

This poses serious challenges to property owners because when several EVs are charging at the same time, a building’s power supply – and our national power grid – can be placed under strain.

With the adoption of EVs growing exponentially, and more manufacturers committing to going all-electric in the coming years, charging electric vehicles poses a risk if not done correctly.

Smart, scalable EV chargers that manage power load automatically are essential.

Thundergrid offers a load management system to distribute the available power in a building to several EVs, which can be expanded over time.

The risks of not using load management

With chargers that don’t have load management, expect to see:

  • An increase in tripped fuses in homes and offices which are drawing more energy than their power connection can handle – plunging homes or offices into darkness.

  • Power price increases. Utility companies will have to invest billions into upgrading transformers to service higher demand from homes and business using electricity as a transport fuel.

  • Power plants having to run on fossil fuels (“Peaker” plants) to inject additional electricity into the network at peak periods. If too many EVs are charging when there is not enough renewable energy being generated it will put strain on the power network. The aim of EVs is to reduce emissions – not cause extra!

  • Un-needed investment in large power cabling. Often electrical connections are being oversized to buildings that might contain fleets of EVs as a precaution by engineers. This results in thousands of dollars being invested into power cables, power boards and transformer capacity. In reality, this is not needed if charging power is simply managed smartly.

We need to be installing smart chargers

Smart chargers allow you to set and forget - without the worry of overheated plug sockets, fuse trips or sharp energy price increases.

Thundergrid focuses solely on smart chargers and is building a network of EV charge stations that are responsive to both local and wider grid conditions. Our chargers will charge any EV at the maximum possible speed, working in harmony with the available power during high demand periods. So users can truly plug-in and go.

It’s all done automatically

When clustered together, our chargers listen to each user’s charging needs, observe the limits of the power connection, and adjust to suit.
